Alfred dreyfus wife and children9/2/2023 ![]() In spite of the Supreme Court’s declaration of Dreyfus’ innocence and his award of the Légion d’Honneur in 1906, the Affair cast a long shadow into the 1940s, when the anti-Dreyfusard Action Française was influential in France’s shameful treatment of Jews under the Vichy regime. Read cites anti-Semitism as a primary contributory factor towards Dreyfus’ arrest on 15 October 1894 and subsequent exiling on the notorious Devil’s Island, off the coast of French Guiana. Graphologists analysed the bordereau to link it to Dreyfus, even without convincing evidence. This cause célèbre started with a scrap of a letter (or bordereau) containing French military details, found in a German embassy wastepaper-basket by a cleaning lady working for French Intelligence.īrilliant, rich and, importantly, Alsatian, Dreyfus had risen quickly through the army ranks but had attracted attention because of his Jewishness and introspectiveness. The subtitle of Read’s book is borne out by his detailed reconstruction of how officers and commanders deliberately ignored or, worse, fabricated evidence. This notorious case has undergone numerous academic and popular study, following the centenary of Alfred Dreyfus’ rehabilitation in 1906. It is a book that unquestionably resonates with us today. The Dreyfus Affair: The Story of the Most Infamous Miscarriage of Justice in French History “įive Years of My Life speaks to the fortitude, perseverance, and love of Alfred and Lucie Dreyfus, two innocent people snared in a web of evil. All too soon, I am awakened from my dream and brought back to reality by a child’s voice. Then I believe myself to be near you, I speak softly of hope. With a supreme effort I seek to reach out to you. ”There are moments when my heart is so swollen, when your sufferings re-echo in my soul with such force, so piercingly, that I can no longer control myself. Lucie writes back with passion and courage: (March 6, 1898). But my spirit soon revives, quivering with pain, with energy, with implacable desire for the most precious thing in this world, our honor, the honor of our children, the honor of us all.” “Truly,” he writes to Lucie, “were it a question of myself alone, long ago would I have gone to seek in the peace of the tomb forgetfulness of all that I have seen, all of that I have heard. ![]() ![]() Imprisoned in a walled-in hut in brutal heat, for months chained to his bed at night so that he could not turn over, watched 24-hours a day by guards who were forbidden to speak to him, denied books to read or any means of exercising, and only at several months lapse receiving any letters from his wife, (and those often just censored copies), his health rapidly deteriorated, but his determination to survive and prove his innocence remained strong. “I live only by feverish will from day to day,” Dreyfus wrote to Lucie on September 4, 1897. Their letters are one of the great love stories of all times. Excerpts from the letters that Alfred and Lucie wrote to each other, between Devil’s island and Paris, are included in Five Years. Alfred left behind in Paris his wife Lucie, who, forbidden to join her husband in exile, struggled to protect their two children from the rampant anti-Semitism that swirled about them, while she begged her husband to hold onto life as she tried to clear his name. ![]() ![]() His prison diary, published as Five Years of My Life in 1901 is a heroic tale of survival against daunting odds: isolation, deprivation, torture. While late-19th-century ornithologists knew little of the variation of these birds, which often live in far-off places, with every new taxon described a few differences between the Old and New World "scops" owls became more and more prominent. The splitting of Otus sensu lato Pacific screech owl ( Megascops cooperi) The screech owls also have a different placement of the procoracoid (less of an anterior incline) and coracoid bones compared to other New World owls. However that may be, the hypothesis that the group evolved from Old World stock is tentatively supported by cytochrome b sequence data. Like almost all scops and screech owls today, their common ancestor was in all probability already a small owl, with ear tufts and at least the upper tarsus ("leg") feathered. Note, no reliable estimate of divergence time is known, as Otus and Megascops are osteologically very similar, as is to be expected from a group that has apparently conserved its ecomorphology since before its evolutionary radiation. ![]() The scops and screech owl lineage probably evolved at some time during the Miocene (like most other genera of typical owls), and the three (see below) modern lineages separated perhaps roughly 5 million years ago. A screech owl fossil from the Late Pliocene of Kansas (which is almost identical to eastern and western screech owls) indicates a longstanding presence of these birds in the Americas, while coeval scops owl fossils very similar to the Eurasian scops owl have been found at S'Onix on Majorca. ![]() What is certain is that they are very closely related they may be considered sister lineages which fill essentially the same ecological niche in their allopatric ranges. The evolutionary relationships of the scops and screech owls are not entirely clear. The type species is the eastern screech owl ( Megascops asio). The genus Megascops was introduced by German naturalist Johann Jakob Kaup in 1848. The distinctness of many species of screech owls was first realized when vastly differing calls of externally similar birds from adjacent regions were noted.Įvolution, taxonomy, and systematics Calls differ widely between species in type and pitch, and in the field are often the first indication of these birds' presence, as well as the most reliable means to distinguish between species. They also have a kind of " song" used in courtship, and as a duet, between members of a pair. Their normal territorial call is not a hoot as with some owls, but a trill consisting of more than four individual calls per second given in rapid succession (although the sound does not resemble screeching or screaming). The screech owls are named for their piercing calls. Northern screech owls are found in eastern states, such as New Jersey and New York. The young of most screech owls are altricial to semialtricial. These birds are monogamous, with biparental care. During the incubation period, the male feeds the female. The females select their mate based on the quality of the cavity and the food located inside. During the late winter breeding season, however, males make nests in cavities, sometimes reusing abandoned nests of other animals, to try to attract females. They usually carry their prey back to their nests, presumably to guard against the chance of losing their meal to a larger raptor. They also possess well-developed raptorial claws and a curved bill, both of which are used for tearing their prey into pieces small enough to swallow easily. Screech owls have a good sense of hearing, which helps them locate their prey in any habitat. ![]() They prefer areas that contain old trees with hollows these are home to their prey, which includes insects, reptiles, small mammals such as bats and mice, and small birds. Screech owls hunt from perches in semiopen landscapes. This coloration helps them get camouflage against the tree bark. They have different brownish hues with whitish, patterned underside. They have prominent, wide-set feather tufts with bright yellow/green eyes. They are small and agile, and about 7 to 10 inches tall and have a wingspan around 18 to 24 inches. Similar to other owls, the screech owl females are larger than the males of their species. Long-tufted screech owl ( Megascops sanctaecatarinae) Description Some species formerly placed with them are nowadays considered more distinct (see below for details). ![]() Screech owls are restricted to the Americas. For most of the 20th century, this genus was merged with the Old World scops owls in Otus, but nowadays it is again considered separately based on a range of behavioral, biogeographical, morphological, and DNA sequence data. Screech owls are typical owls ( Strigidae) belonging to the genus Megascops with 23 living species. ![]() Deezer review9/2/2023 ![]() On 15 August, Deezer announced it would be available in Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand within several weeks. Service was not available across the whole of Europe until 15 March 2012, and service launched in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand on 25 April. According to the company, it planned to make its services available to all of Europe by the end of the year, to the Americas (excluding the United States) by the end of January 2012, to Africa and Southeast Asia by the end of February, and the rest of the world (excluding Japan) by the end of June. On 7 December 2011, Deezer, at the time available only in Belgium, France and the United Kingdom, announced plans to expand worldwide during the rest of 2011 and continuing into 2012. Also in September, Deezer added Facebook integration to its service, allowing users to send music to one another via that social media service. The two companies expanded their partnership in September 2011 to include Orange contract customers in the UK. By January 2011, 500,000 people were subscribing to the service, and the millionth subscriber mark joined in the middle of 2011, which was half a year ahead of Deezer's expectation. Almost immediately after the partnership began, the rate of users signing up for Deezer's premium services went from 6,000 a month to 100,000. In August 2010, mobile operator Orange partnered with Deezer in a deal to include free access to Deezer Premium, the highest tier of Deezer's streaming packages, with some of Orange's telecommunications contracts in France. In January 2010, the company's CEO and co-founder, Jonathan Benassaya, was replaced as CEO by Axel Dauchez, after fewer than 15,000 of Deezer's 12 million users signed up for its subscription services. While continuing basic free web streaming, the company also introduced two subscription services: users paying €4.99 monthly received higher audio quality music without ads, and users paying €9.99 monthly gained access to downloadable applications for computers, as well as Android, BlackBerry and iOS mobile devices. On 5 November 2009, Deezer launched a new three-tier service model. ![]() The company introduced mandatory registration in February 2009 to gather more precise data on users, to run more targeted ads, and in November 2009 began running audio ads between songs. In July 2008, the company began running ads itself through advertising agency Deezer Media. During the first half of 2008, the company saw revenue of just 875,000 euros, which was not enough to pay its licensing fees. ![]() ĭespite the high traffic, Deezer almost immediately ran into financial problems. By May 2008, 2.75 million people used the service each month, and there were seven million users by December 2009. During its first month of operations, Deezer's website had about 773,000 visitors, and traffic increased rapidly in the next several years. It took more than two years for agreements to be signed with the four largest labels, as well as various smaller ones, but by 2011 the company had rights to about eight million songs. Launch Īt the time of its launch in 2007, Deezer had not yet negotiated agreements with major music labels and therefore offered a limited catalogue. It was relaunched as Deezer in August 2007, having reached an agreement with SACEM to pay copyright holders with revenue from advertising on the site and by giving users the ability to download songs streamed on Deezer from iTunes, with Deezer receiving a commission from each purchase. The site in its original incarnation was charged with copyright infringement by French agency SACEM and shut down in April 2007. In 2006, Daniel Marhely developed the first version of Deezer, called Blogmusik. Deezer is available via web () and a number of digital platforms, including Android, iOS, macOS and others. PSAPs continue to struggle with staffing and classification issues, and the Program supports efforts to improve recruiting and retention at 911 centers for the thousands of telecommunicators working to serve their communities across the U.S. The National 911 Program supports the work of the 911 community to provide training strategies for telecommunicators and has previously convened a working group of 911 associations to develop recommended minimum training guidelines for telecommunicators. Managers and supervisors may also be certified as emergency number professionals (ENPs) or certified public-safety executives (CPEs). Some 911 professionals are certified as emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs), emergency fire dispatchers (EFDs) or emergency police dispatchers (EPDs). This varied governance produces a unique challenge for training telecommunicators, as each agency may have its own educational standards. Throughout the nation, 911 call centers or public safety answering points (PSAPs)-also called Emergency Communication Centers (ECCs)-are managed by a variety of local and state agencies. They may also provide instructions to the 911 caller, which in many cases is essential to stabilizing or saving a life. RESULTSĬontinuous recording and real-time graphical display of vital signs are essential for critical care. Each year in the United States, approximately 300,000 neonates, including a large fraction with exceptionally fragile health due to severe prematurity and very low birth weight (<1500 g), are admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) ( 1). Existing monitoring systems for the NICU require multiple electrode/sensor interfaces to the skin, with hard-wired connections to separately located base units that may be stand-alone or wall-mounted, for heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), temperature, blood oxygenation (SpO 2), and blood pressure (BP). This hardware also interferes with emergency clinical interventions and radiological studies, and impedes therapeutic skin-to-skin contact (colloquially known as kangaroo mother care) between parents and their infant.Īlthough such technologies are essential to clinical care, the associated web of wires complicates even the most basic bedside tasks, such as turning a neonate from prone to supine. Moreover, the adhesives that couple these wired electrodes to the fragile skin of the neonates are a frequent cause of iatrogenic injuries and subsequent scarring ( 2– 4).Ī fully wireless alternative that eliminates mechanical stresses and potentially reduces injury risk, and that deploys effectively on the full range of gestational ages encountered in the NICU, would represent a substantial advance over the existing standard of care. ![]() SKINNY KID MOTOR PLATE COPIED TEAM Z FULL SKINNY KID MOTOR PLATE COPIED TEAM Z SKINĪlthough textile-based sensors are of interest, these technologies retain wired connections across the body, and their inability to support an intimate connection to the skin precludes reliable operation at clinical-grade levels of accuracy, particularly with motion ( 5– 7).
